Finca Churupampa is a very progressive coffee farm in Chirinos, Cajamarca, Peru. The Tocto brothers took over the farm’s operations from their parents several years ago and are transforming it into a model for economically and environmentally sustainable coffee production. In addition to selling coffee from their own farm, the Toctos provide export and marketing services for 215 neighboring farmers. Finca Churupampa has a training center that is open to the entire community, and works with farmers to improve their production practices to break a cycle of poverty that has entrapped farmers in the region for many years. Churupampa is highly focused on the welfare of both the coffee producers and the environment. They provide farmers with opportunities to improve production practices, focus on organic farming, and utilize a soil management program which produces fertilizers and compost using a diverse selection of microorganisms gathered from the surrounding forest.

The Sunrise is built around sweetness, silky body and a restrained acidity. Originally designed as a traditional espresso blend, we’ve found it serves very well as a drip coffee for those who prefer a simpler, smoother cup with lots of ripe red cherry. It shines with or without cream, and works especially well as a cold brew, where it’s cola and tamarind flavors come out into full blossom. Takes dark roasts well, especially for those who like their coffees to be full of deep pipe tobacco and malty sweetness. The components of the Sunrise Blend rotate seasonally as fresh coffees arrive, but the current iteration is comprised of a naturally processed Brazilian coffee and a washed process Ethiopian coffee.

Tolima, Colombia has often been recognized more for its struggles with violence in recent decades than for its specialty coffee. However, this narrative is shifting thanks to the dedicated efforts of producer groups like ASOPEP. Against all odds, ASOPEP has transformed into one of the most professionalized cooperatives in the region, consistently offering world-class coffees year after year. Not only is ASOPEP committed to producing exceptional coffee, but it also serves as a significant force for good in the community, fostering positive change and development throughout the region. Their commitment extends beyond coffee production, as they actively engage in initiatives that uplift local farmers and improve the quality of life for families in Tolima.

Farmers Impact Fund

farmersimpact.jpg

We go above and beyond paying producers a living income‑based price by making further Investments in coffee communities. We believe that making investments above and beyond the price of coffee further enables coffee producers to break out of the cycle of poverty plaguing the world’s coffee farmers.

The Farmer Impact Fund was designed to leverage the collective power of retailers and coffee drinkers to disrupt this cycle of debt and help pull farm communities out of poverty.

Projects funded by the program are chosen independently by coffee producers and cooperatives.

The Farmer Impact Fund has helped producers and coffee communities complete projects that include putting a roof on a school in Papua New Guinea, providing emergency dental care to female farmers in Guatemala, and building community gardens in Peru to subsidize the local food economy and many more.

Paying a more equitable price for coffee is not just the ethical thing to do ‑ it’s key to the future of a thriving, sustainable, and diverse coffee industry. Join us to help move the needle on farmer outcomes for the coffee industry.

Living Income Pricing

Poverty in the Coffeelands is an enduring crisis–one, that producers have struggled with for generations. 80% of the world’s coffee farmers live below the poverty line, despite rising retail prices and increasing consumer demand for specialty coffee. There is substantial evidence that demonstrates that systematically low prices are the predominant root cause of poverty and a key barrier to livelihood advancement.

Unsustainably low prices paid to farmers exist alongside myriad other challenges, including market fluctuations, coffee leaf rust, climate change, rising labor costs due to a growing shortage of migrant workers, and increasing opportunity costs that are forcing droves of farmers to seek other work altogether, often in other countries.

While the price for a cup of coffee in your local shop keeps rising, the price farmers receive for their coffee has not meaningfully changed in 40 years.

Our mission is to increase farmer equity by paying prices that meet farmers’ livelihood needs and by investing in farm communities where we source coffee. We do this in two ways:

  • Pay prices that meet farmers’ livelihood needs through Living Income Pricing

  • Invest in farming communities through Farmer Impact Fund
